History of cameos:

Cameos are works of miniature sculptured art. Their original purpose is lost in history, with the original intent of individual pieces known only to the craftsmen who carved them. 
Cameos reveal the manners, customs, philosophies, historic events, and social occasions that have marked our past. The ancient cameos, like fine art and sculpture, were intended as statements. Only in the last few hundred years has the significance eroded as cameos began to depict endless profiles—of vapid females.

The most popular cameos today are carved in sea shells, a tradition that began in the fifteenth or sixteenth century and was popularized by Queen Victoria of England. Since that time, cameos have predominately showcased women's profiles, and been worn by women who enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of hand-carved cameos. Cameo where alway use to show off how rich the women was in the Victorian time. Its not as easy to get a vintage cameo unless you get in passed down from family or pay a lot of money for it... these day it very easy to get franks that just look as nice but are not the same thing.

So you start to ask why are cameo so popular in the Gothic culture today i guess it due to the victorian style a lot of Gothic fashion has an Victorian element and feel to the outfit. and cameo are just a beautiful piece of jewellery that show off art work and gothic people do love beautiful artwork.

These day cameo are very popular and you can almost get any art design you want in the middle e.g... are Victorian lady like the queen but you wondering how this it goth?
